Rumour has it, it was a dead wasp, held up by the president for the King to inspect. “Isn’t that interesting,” he supposedly said to Charles, who, like the Queen, looks bemused.
The dutiful first lady, however, is aghast. I recognised this look; fake, devoted, deeply interested, because it’s the same look I give my husband when he explains the plot of a film we’re watching to me. “Wow, that’s so interesting, I’d never have known!” Or, when he excitedly asks if I wanna know how something works mechanically. “Thank God that I now know the intricacies of a digital camera.”
Her response, in fact, reveals something profound about her: she is a lioness at the gates for her family.
